We study interactions between hydrology and ecology in wetlands, streams and rivers with an interest in understanding the linked ecohydrological processes well enough to use them to improve water quality.

- How do physical obstacles to flow such as aquatic vegetation, change microscale contaminant removal processes important to water quality?
- Can we enhance freshwater biological process rates in order to improve water quality both locally and at larger scales?

How: Research Approach
We use a wide range of methods to address research questions including field observations and experiments, controlled laboratory experiments in flumes or other mesocosms, data analysis and mathematical process models. Methods used typically match the type of research question posed and the interests and skills of the researcher.
Who: Researchers
Researchers in our group have a wide range of experience and skills which we all benefit from by sharing our science as linked through our common interests. Group members include masters and doctoral graduate students, undergraduates and postdoctoral research associates.

Study shows constructed wetlands are best protection for agricultural runoff into waterways
A new paper from a lead author based at the University of Kansas finds wetlands constructed along waterways are the most cost-effective way to reduce nitrate and sediment loads in large streams and rivers. Rather than focusing on individual farms, the research suggests conservation efforts using wetlands should be implemented at the watershed scale.
